Costa Rica customs regulations

It is important to know about customs regulations before traveling to Costa Rica to avoid legal issues and potential fines. As you know, customs regulations widely depend on the country. Before traveling to (or from) Costa Rica make sure to check the allowance and limits for the next things:

  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Currency
  • Medicines (especially those containing drugs)

Import regulations in Costa Rica

Duty-free allowance

Tobacco limit

  • 500 grams of tobacco products.

Bringing alcohol

  • Restricted to travellers 18 years and over;
  • 5 litres of alcohol.

Other goods

  • Medication for personal use should be accompanied by a prescription.
  • Baby food.
  • 2kg candy.
  • Personal electronics.
  • Other goods for personal use, including clothing, jewellery, and toys.

Restricted items

These goods are strictly regulated, and in most cases require a permit to be obtained prior to arrival.

  • Pets must have a an animal passport or a health certificate for the transport of domestic animals.
